Kambo · The Peruvian Amazon
The Spirit of Kambo.
The Heart of the Jungle.
Kambo is not a wellness trend invented in a treatment room. It comes from the Amazon. Here, the medicine is approached with respect for its origins, its intensity and the responsibility that comes with serving it.
The medicine
Small secretion.
Powerful response.
Kambo is the skin secretion of the giant monkey frog, Phyllomedusa bicolor, a large tree frog native to the Amazon basin. The secretion contains a complex mixture of biologically active peptides.
Traditionally, Kambo has been used by several Indigenous peoples of the western Amazon in contexts associated with hunting, strength, clearing what is sometimes described as panema, and addressing illness or misfortune. Modern Western use has expanded far beyond those original contexts.
We do not need to exaggerate the medicine to respect it. Kambo produces an intense, short-lived physiological response. It deserves careful preparation, appropriate screening and a practitioner who understands when not to serve it.
The frog
The medicine begins
with a living animal.
The giant monkey frog lives high in Amazonian vegetation. Kambo is collected from the frog's skin secretion and traditionally dried onto small wooden sticks.
For us, the frog is not simply a source of product. Ethical handling matters. The animal should be treated carefully and returned alive to its environment. The relationship with the forest cannot be separated from respect for the life inside it.
Coming to the Amazon makes that reality difficult to forget. The medicine has an ecosystem behind it.
Tradition and humility
Respect the lineage.
Do not pretend to own it.
Kambo has a long history among Indigenous communities in the Amazon, but there is no single universal Kambo tradition that belongs to every people in the same way. Practices, stories and uses differ between communities.
KAIO Healing does not claim Indigenous identity or borrow one for marketing. The aim is simpler: acknowledge where the medicine comes from, respect the people whose knowledge carried it, work responsibly, and avoid turning the Amazon into costume.
What a session involves
Preparation matters
as much as application.
Screening
Your health history, medications and relevant contraindications need to be discussed before Kambo is considered.
Preparation
The process is explained clearly so you understand what may happen and can make an informed decision about participation.
Application
Small superficial points are made on the skin and a small amount of secretion is applied. The response can begin quickly and may be physically intense.
Recovery
The active phase is generally short compared with an Ayahuasca ceremony. Afterwards there is time to rest, recover and rehydrate appropriately.
Why the Amazon?
Because this is
where Kambo lives.
Kambo can be served in many places. But working with it in the Amazon changes the context completely. The frog, the climate, the forest and the medicine's history are no longer abstractions.
Our centre sits deep in preserved jungle, around three hours beyond Pucallpa. There is no electricity. You bathe in the stream. Wildlife remains around you. The environment does not need to be decorated to feel Amazonian.
Learning to serve Kambo here in the jungle brings you closer to the living world of the frog. Training in the Amazon is not simply about technique; it is an opportunity to develop a deeper relationship with the medicine, its home and the responsibility of working with it.
The point is not that geography magically makes Kambo stronger. It is that coming here allows you to understand the medicine inside a much larger living world.
Kambo within the retreat
Optional.
Never compulsory.
Three ceremonies available
Our ten-day Amazon retreat can include up to three Kambo ceremonies for participants who want them and for whom Kambo is appropriate. They are included within the retreat price.
Treated as its own medicine
Kambo is not used as a theatrical warm-up for Ayahuasca. It has its own character, physiological demands and reasons for being served. Participation is a separate decision.
Respect includes caution
Powerful does not mean
harmless.
Kambo is physiologically active and is not appropriate for everyone. Relevant medical history and medications must be disclosed before participation.
The goal is not to prove toughness, chase an extreme purge or collect dramatic experiences. Application should be considered and proportionate.
Both dehydration and excessive water intake can be dangerous. Preparation and recovery instructions should be followed rather than improvised.
Kambo should not be presented as a proven cure for serious diseases. Respect for traditional use does not require making unsupported medical claims.
For practitioners
Kambo Spirit School.
KAIO Healing is focused on bringing people into the Amazon for direct experience. Practitioner education is kept separate through Kambo Spirit School, where the training pathway can be explored in full.
